Pakistan Movement

1906 – 1947

The Pakistan Movement was a historic political struggle that led to the creation of Pakistan as an independent state for the Muslims of British India.

Rooted in the philosophy of Allama Iqbal and galvanized by the unparalleled leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the movement systematically dismantled the notion that Muslims and Hindus could exist as one nation under a single government.

The movement culminated in the Lahore Resolution of 1940, which formally demanded separate homelands, and the ultimate realization of that dream on 14 August 1947.

🇵🇰 Did You Know?

The name "PAKSTAN" was coined in 1933 by Cambridge student Choudhry Rahmat Ali in his pamphlet "Now or Never". It stood for Punjab, Afghan (NWFP), Kashmir, Sindh, and BaluchisTAN, while also meaning "Land of the Pure" in Urdu and Persian.

Two-Nation Theory

The ideological foundation of the movement was the 'Two-Nation Theory' — the principle that Hindus and Muslims were two distinct nations with separate religious, cultural, and historical identities, and thus required separate political futures.

Quaid-e-Azam's Leadership

Jinnah transformed the Muslim League from a gentleman's association into a mass political party. His incisive legal mind, moral authority, and negotiating brilliance proved decisive in securing Pakistan. He famously described India's Muslims as 'a nation according to any definition of nationhood.'

Allama Iqbal's Vision

Iqbal, Pakistan's national poet, first articulated the geographical concept of an autonomous Muslim state in his 1930 Allahabad Address. His philosophy of 'Khudi' (self-reliance) inspired generations of freedom fighters.

The Lahore Resolution, 1940

Adopted on 23 March 1940, the Lahore Resolution formally demanded the creation of independent sovereign states for Muslims in the northwestern and northeastern zones of India. This date is now celebrated as Pakistan Day.
